UroLift® System
1. What is the UroLift® System?
The UroLift® System is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — also known as an enlarged prostate. It uses tiny implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way, so it no longer blocks the urethra, allowing improved urine flow without cutting, heating, or removing tissue.
2. How does UroLift® work?
During the procedure:
Small implants are placed through the urethra into the prostate
These implants pull back the enlarged prostate lobes like curtain tie-backs
This creates a clear channel for urine to pass, improving symptoms
It’s typically done in-office under local anesthesia and takes about 10–20 minutes.
3. Who is a good candidate for UroLift®?
UroLift may be ideal for men who:
Have moderate urinary symptoms from BPH
Want a non-surgical solution with quick recovery
Want to avoid long-term medications
Are concerned about preserving sexual and ejaculatory function
Have a prostate size of up to 80 grams, with minimal median lobe obstruction
4. What are the benefits of the UroLift® procedure?
Rapid symptom relief, often within 2 weeks
No cutting or heating of prostate tissue
Preserves sexual and ejaculatory function
Outpatient procedure with quick recovery
Often eliminates the need for BPH medications
5. What is recovery like after UroLift®?
Most men return to normal activities within 2–3 days
Temporary mild burning, urgency, or blood in urine may occur for a few days
A urinary catheter is not always needed, but may be used for 1–2 days depending on your situation
6. Are there risks or side effects?
As with any procedure, possible side effects include:
Temporary urinary discomfort, frequency, or urgency
Mild pelvic pain or bleeding
Rarely, need for retreatment or additional BPH procedures
UroLift has a very low risk of sexual side effects, making it unique among BPH treatments.
7. How long does the UroLift® treatment last?
Clinical studies show that symptom relief lasts for at least 5 years for many men. Some may eventually need a repeat procedure, but UroLift is designed to delay or avoid more invasive surgery.
