InterStim® Therapy

1. What is InterStim Therapy?

InterStim® Therapy is an implantable neuromodulation treatment used to help people who suffer from bladder control problems, including:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB)

  • Urinary urgency and frequency

  • Urge incontinence (leaking urine with a strong urge)

  • Non-obstructive urinary retention (difficulty emptying the bladder)

It works by stimulating the sacral nerves, which help control the bladder and bowel.

2. How does InterStim work?

The InterStim device delivers mild electrical impulses to the sacral nerves located in the lower back. These nerves communicate between the brain and the bladder. By restoring proper nerve signals, InterStim can help improve or normalize bladder function.

3. Who is a good candidate for InterStim?

You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have not had success with lifestyle changes or medications

  • Experience urge incontinence, urgency, frequency, or urinary retention

  • Want a reversible, adjustable option that does not involve major surgery

InterStim is FDA-approved for both men and women with certain urinary and bowel disorders.

4. What are the benefits of InterStim Therapy?

  • Significant improvement in bladder control symptoms

  • Minimally invasive and reversible

  • Drug-free solution

  • Long-term symptom relief (often lasting 5+ years)

  • Customizable device with rechargeable or non-rechargeable options

5. What is the process for getting InterStim?

InterStim therapy is done in two stages:

1. Test Phase (Trial):

  • A temporary wire is placed to stimulate the nerves

  • You wear an external stimulator for 3–7 days

  • If your symptoms improve significantly (often 50% or more), you may move to full implantation

2. Implantation (If Trial is Successful):

  • A small pulse generator (like a pacemaker) is placed under the skin in the upper buttock

  • The device is connected to a permanent lead near the sacral nerves

  • The system is programmed wirelessly to optimize symptom relief

6. What is recovery like after InterStim placement?

  • The procedure is typically outpatient

  • Most patients return to normal activities within a few days

  • Some mild soreness or swelling at the implant site is common

  • You’ll have follow-up visits to fine-tune settings

7. What are the risks or side effects?

Most patients tolerate InterStim well. Possible risks include:

  • Pain at the implant site

  • Infection or lead migration

  • Temporary tingling or uncomfortable stimulation (can be adjusted)

  • Rare need for device revision

All components are removable if needed.

8. How long does the InterStim device last?

  • Rechargeable InterStim Micro™: lasts up to 15 years

  • Non-rechargeable InterStim II™: battery lasts about 5 years
