Bulkamid® Urethral Bulking

1. What is Bulkamid®?

Bulkamid is a minimally invasive urethral bulking agent used to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women. It involves injecting a soft, water-based gel into the urethral wall to help it close more effectively during physical activities, such as coughing, laughing, or exercising.

2. How does Bulkamid® work?

Bulkamid® adds volume to the urethral wall, improving its ability to seal shut and prevent urine leakage when pressure is placed on the bladder. The gel consists of 97.5% water and 2.5% polyacrylamide, and it remains stable in the body without breaking down over time.

3. Who is a candidate for Bulkamid®?

Bulkamid® is ideal for women with stress urinary incontinence, especially those who:

  • Experience leakage with physical activity or movement

  • Prefer a minimally invasive option

  • Are not ready for or do not qualify for surgery

  • Have had previous incontinence treatments that were not effective

4. What happens during the Bulkamid® procedure?

The treatment is usually done in the office or outpatient setting and takes about 10–15 minutes. During the procedure:

  • A local anesthetic is applied to minimize discomfort

  • A small needle is passed through a scope and used to inject the gel into 3–4 sites in the urethral wall

  • Most patients go home shortly afterward

5. What is the recovery like after Bulkamid®?

Recovery is typically quick:

  • Most patients resume normal activities within 24–48 hours

  • Mild urinary urgency, frequency, or discomfort may occur briefly

  • You may be asked to avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for a few days

  • Improvement is often noticed immediately or within a few weeks

6. How effective is Bulkamid®?

In clinical studies, over 75% of women reported significant improvement or complete resolution of their incontinence symptoms at 12 months post-treatment. Bulkamid® has also shown long-term durability with low complication rates.

7. Are there any risks or side effects?

Side effects are rare but may include:

  • Temporary burning with urination

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)

  • Mild pelvic discomfort

  • Rarely, difficulty urinating after the procedure

Your urologist will review all potential risks and how to manage them before the procedure.

8. How long does Bulkamid® last?

Bulkamid® offers long-lasting symptom relief, often for several years. Because it is non-degradable, repeat injections are not typically needed as frequently as with some other bulking agents. However, results can vary, and repeat treatment may be recommended based on your response.
