Aquablation® Therapy

1. What is Aquablation Therapy?

Aquablation® therapy is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. It uses a precise, robotically controlled high-pressure water jet to remove excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow, without using heat.

2. How does Aquablation work?

Aquablation combines:

  • Real-time imaging with ultrasound to map the prostate

  • A robotic-controlled water jet to precisely remove prostate tissue

Because no heat is used, there is less risk of damaging nearby structures, potentially preserving sexual and urinary function.

3. Who is a good candidate for Aquablation?

Aquablation may be ideal for men with:

  • Moderate to severe urinary symptoms from BPH

  • Prostates of all sizes, especially larger glands

  • Concerns about preserving ejaculation or sexual function

It is especially useful for patients who prefer a long-term solution without compromising quality of life.

4. What are the benefits of Aquablation?

  • Durable symptom relief

  • Effective for larger prostates

  • Minimally invasive with no incisions

  • Heat-free, reducing the risk of sexual side effects

  • Typically performed with an overnight hospital stay

5. What happens during the procedure?

  • Performed under general or spinal anesthesia

  • A robotic device is inserted through the urethra

  • The water jet precisely removes excess tissue

  • A temporary catheter is placed afterward to aid healing

  • Procedure time is usually 40–60 minutes

6. What is recovery like after Aquablation?

  • Most men stay in the hospital for one night

  • A catheter is used for 2–5 days, depending on prostate size

  • Mild urinary symptoms such as urgency or frequency may last for a few weeks

  • Most men return to regular activities within 1–2 weeks

7. Are there side effects or risks?

As with any procedure, potential side effects include:

  • Blood in urine for several days

  • Temporary urinary urgency or discomfort

  • Rarely, urinary tract infections or need for re-treatment
Unlike traditional surgeries, Aquablation has a lower risk of affecting ejaculation and sexual function.

8. How does Aquablation compare to other BPH treatments?

Compared to TURP, laser procedures, or medication:

  • Aquablation is more precise and less invasive

  • Offers similar or better symptom relief for larger prostates

  • Has fewer long-term side effects, particularly related to sexual health
