Penile Implants

1. What is a penile implant?

A penile implant (also known as a penile prosthesis) is a medical device surgically placed inside the penis to allow men with erectile dysfunction (ED) to achieve an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. It is typically considered when other ED treatments like medications or injections are ineffective or not tolerated.

2. Who is a candidate for a penile implant?

Penile implants are an option for men who:

  • Have severe or long-standing ED

  • Have not had success with oral ED medications or injections

  • Have specific conditions such as Peyronie’s disease with erectile dysfunction

  • Are looking for a permanent and reliable solution

Your urologist will evaluate your medical history, lifestyle, and treatment goals before recommending an implant.

3. What types of penile implants are available?

There are two main types:

  • Inflatable implants: The most common type. These consist of two or three components (cylinders, a pump, and a reservoir) that allow the penis to become erect when desired and flaccid otherwise.

  • Malleable (semi-rigid) implants: Bendable rods placed inside the penis that keep it firm but bendable. These are simpler mechanically and easier to use but less natural in appearance.

4. What is the surgery like?

Penile implant surgery is typically an outpatient procedure lasting about 1 hour:

  • Performed under general or spinal anesthesia

  • A small incision is made at the base of the penis or lower abdomen

  • The implant is inserted into the penile shaft, and in inflatable systems, a pump is placed in the scrotum

Patients usually return home the same day and can expect to resume sexual activity within 4 to 6 weeks.

5. What is the recovery process?

After surgery:

  • Mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common and improve within 1–2 weeks

  • You may be given pain medication and antibiotics

  • Follow-up visits ensure proper healing and implant function

  • For inflatable implants, your urologist will teach you how to operate the device once healing is complete

6. How effective are penile implants?

Penile implants have a high satisfaction rate, with more than 85–90% of men and their partners reporting improved sexual satisfaction. They provide a natural-looking erection and restore spontaneity to sexual activity.

7. What are the risks or complications?

Although generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Infection

  • Mechanical failure (rare with modern devices)

  • Implant erosion or migration

  • Temporary pain or swelling

  • Need for revision surgery in rare cases

Your surgeon will review these risks and steps taken to minimize them before your procedure.

8. How long does a penile implant last?

Most penile implants last 10–15 years or longer, depending on the type and patient use. If the device fails or wears out over time, it can be safely replaced with another implant.

9. Will I still be able to orgasm and ejaculate?

Yes. Penile implants restore the ability to have an erection but do not affect sensation, orgasm, or ejaculation. If you were able to have orgasms before the implant, you should still be able to after the procedure.
